Is a best movie one you’d watch over and over again or a haunting film you only have the emotional energy for once a decade?

This won’t be the last David Fincher film on the list.

Deadpool was my most enjoyable superhero movie of the decade. It was funny and irreverent and didn’t take itself too seriously, and I laugh hard every time I watch.

Black Panther could just as well sit atop the Summer Blockbusters, but this was not just another Marvel movie. Black Panther was different. The music was different, the setting was different. The characters, the storytelling, all a little different. It was unprepared for how meaningfully different it was to see an African hero and back story on the big screen. It’s the only one of all the Marvel superhero movies I’d be eager to go back for.

It didn’t have much contention. The only other three movies from 2012 on my list were in the previous tier: 21 Jump Street, Pitch Perfect, and Avengers.

And in classic Esmail fashion, the ending is open to interpretation depending on how you see life, or maybe even how you feel that day.

Just Mercy is the true story of defense attorney Bryan Stevenson, a Black Harvard law grad who moves to Alabama to help death row prison inmates find justice.

Room was my introduction to Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, and both were magnificent. Joy and 5-year-old Jack have been held captive for years in a tiny shed they call “Room,” as Joy does everything she can to help Jack escape their captor and experience the real world for the first time.

Of course, it helps to have a heck of a crew back on Earth doing everything they can to bring you home.

Another Michael Lewis entry, I recently re-watched Moneyball and it was even better than I remembered. I waited anxiously eight years as my favorite sports book shuffled from one adaptation to the next, then was delighted when it fell into the hands of Aaron Sorkin and Brad Pitt, who did not disappoint.

It’s an exploration of race and family and love, all caught in the intersection of Nanjiani’s Pakistani upbringing and the American culture he’s grown up in. Everything changes when Emily goes into a coma, and you’ll have to watch the rest for yourself. This resonated with me in so many ways, from facing difficult decisions to growing up and understanding culture and family.

It’s the only movie in this top tier that wasn’t the best of its year, only because Get Out was so spectacular. I’m not a horror guy and I fell into every white-person trap set brilliantly by director Jordan Peele, but this was much more than a scary movie. The real horror is the systemic racism the film underlines.

It was about language and communication and time, and the thrilling conclusion left me thinking about everything for weeks afterward.

Spike Jonze’s Her is the beautiful and haunting science fiction romance of Joaquin Phoenix and, well… Siri. Like a full-length Black Mirror episode, Her reveals the dangers of artificial intelligence that’s a bit too intelligent and instant messaging that’s a little too accessible.

No other film better encapsulates the past decade. ■
