AMSTERDAM - Netherlands Dirk Kuijt and Salomon Kalou scored a goal each
Sunday to lead Feyenoord over host Ajax 2-1 in the Dutch league.
Kuijt set up Kalou in the 16th minute with a short cross at the top of the
box, and Kalou returned the favor a minute after halftime on a nearly identical
play from the other direction.
"I've never felt so good after a match," Kuijt said. "Ajax's strength is
positional play and there's no need to deny that they were better in that
respect today. We only had two or three chances _ but we used them."
Substitute Angelos Charisteas scored for Ajax in the 80th.
"We were the better team today, but we lost due to the individual talents of
two Feyenoord players," Ajax midfielder Wesley Sneijder said.
Feyenoord played the final 18 minutes with 10 men after defender Ferne Snoyl
was sent off with two yellow cards in the 72nd.
Also, defending champion PSV Eindhoven beat Roda JC Kerkrade 3-0 on goals
from Jefferson Farfan, Phillip Cocu, and substitute DaMarcus Beasley. It was
Beasley's first match for PSV since he suffered a knee injury in April.
Feyenoord is tied for the league lead with AZ Alkmaar and RKC Waalwijk, each
with nine points. PSV is fourth with seven points, and Ajax is eighth with
three.
On Saturday, AZ beat host Vitesse Arnhem 5-0. Kenneth Perez scored a hat
trick in the second half and Shota Arveladze added two goals in the first half.
In other matches, it was: ADO The Hague 1, SC Heerenveen 0; NEC Nijmegen 1,
RKC Waalwijk 3; Sparta Rotterdam 1, NAC Breda 0; FC Utrecht 1, FC Twente 3;
Heracles Almelo 2, FC Groningen 1; and RBC Roosendaal 1, Willem II 1.
The last time Ajax and Feyenoord met there were riots between supporters, but
there were no reports of any incidents Sunday.
The clubs have agreed that visiting fans will be banned from future matches
for five years if violence recurs.
